hometown favorites

this weekend i spent in alameda with the family. saturday morning my mom and i went garage sailing (one of our favorite sports). we're always on the hunt for vintage fabric and knitting needles, and random sewing supplies. we had luck on our side because one of the stops had vintage fabric, which we bought 5 swatches of, and vintage CLOTHES!!! i grabbed a few dresses, a skirt and a blouse...we continued on to the alameda naval air base, where a book sale was being held in one of the old ballrooms.
the base is no longer active, but is a neat/spooky spot to cruise, being that there are so many empty buildings and houses. the book sale was a success as well, i had to stop myself and avert my eyes as i made my way to the check out line...when i got home i ran upstairs with one of the fabric swatches and sketched a simple trapeze dress. the fabric, which is rayon, is the perfect dress fabric: it drapes well and breathes like cotton the trickiest part was the collar and getting it to lay flat, which i sort of did by cutting it in a half-circle shape.finished and debuting on this autumny monday morning...

Norma Kamali for Walmart

I found out a couple days ago that Norma Kamali did a collection for Walmart. So I immediately went to see if they have the cacoon sweater (see 2nd picture above) I have been lusting after for years (in a cheaper version of course). They did! ... too bad I have been trying to save and thought about it too long. So when I went to order they were all sold out! They only have white left though. I might get it anyways because prices range for 18 to 6 bucks +97 cents shipping! The collection isn't stellar but the prices on these remastered basics can't be beat.

boo!

its the middle of october, and i have yet to choose a halloween costume. in the spirit of the season, i saw this necklace on ach ach liebling's website, aptly titled the "the anti-vamp protection kit"

wow

i have a few websites i like to check in on every so often, either because of content or layout. one of these, erica weiner, is a good balance of both. today's discovery:

erica weiner's new wood link necklaces, i love them all.

graphic layout

i'm working on a new site layout for myself. something of a portfolio, but also possibly something to sell from. therefore, i've been hording images (be it type, illustration, or photo) that could be inspiration...

a great place for insipiration is ffffound.com, hours of funfont 'baskerville swirl' found in the encyclopedia of comparative letterforms for artists & designers
a friend's street at night; pencil box i found buried in an office supply drawerthe top of the rainforest dome at the new cal academy of sciences; the elements of nature contained inside of glass and metal made an interesting compositiona row of big rigs in salinas; there also happened to be a fire coming from the coast, hence the pink backdrop; love the color palette of this shot

undercover mother

winning an ebay auction is like winning a sports game that went into overtime. anxiety building. a release of adrenaline followed by high fives and a nervous smile. losing is usually followed by regret, not aggressive enough. i am watching this mom purse on ebay.

predicted rain

rain has been predicted for the next few days. i'm pretty excited, california more often than not is in a drought, and i really haven't had a good rainy day in a while. i've always been partial to cold weather. bundling up is a joy. cloudy skies make scenery more interesting. curl up with some french-press coffee and a movie... good cold weather dress: the cashmere peyton dress (in honey glaze) and cashmere keepsake cardigan from j.crew, silence & noise buffalo plaid cape at urbn.com
paula bianco wrap scarf from shopbop.com
the jumbled crochet tights from anthropologiei love having a craft to work on when its cold. book from fredflare looks funnnnnnn
and any of these movies will do...
