in the works: a fringe jacket like the one kate moss did for topshop (which is selling for $300 on ebay), the very same one alison mosshart wore when i saw her perform at the treasure island music fest. though i bought 7 yards of black fringe at britex fabric, i'm left with a half-fringed jacket until i can restock. so far its coming along nicely...

i am home sick today, not fun as i am already bored. my body just isnt used to sleeping in and refuses to rest any longer. so i am going to plop myself on the couch and watch a few old movies. staying home sick from school as a kid meant momma (grandma) would come to take care of me and we would watch the AMC channel and eat popsicles. she loved old movies and taught me all the actors and actresses. she also gave me her old film star scrapbook, which she had filled with signed photos from her favorites. i miss her terribly...

Iconoclasts indeed

A couple of weeks ago I got the chance to check out Iconoclasts on the IFC channel. It was soooo good. The 2 paired up were Stella McCartney and Ed Ruscha. I didn't know much about Ed but as I watched I recalled his work and fell in love with it. He does amazing paintings primarily with type which I would discribe as fine pop art. Also since I am a graphic designer, he shows how beautiful type is and what you can do with it. His work sells at auctions for millions. Anyways it was great seeing 2 people on top of their game in aww of each other (mainly Stella being the huge fan). Stella even propositioned Ed to do a piece with her. Wow! Of course Stella is amazing as well. She shows us why all her work is so well tailored and how hard she works. Go on girl!

i think most folks can relate when i say i have certain people i watch for on my morning walks. they provide comfort in familiarity, but also entertainment, because in case you didn't know there are a few eccentrics in san francisco. by 'eccentric' i mean it in the most admirable way possible. one of my favorite characters, and one whom i've seen for years, is equal parts nancy sintatra and betsey johnson. she normally wears bright pink coats, tops, full skirts, hats, scarves, with the occasional red thrown in. unfortunately i don't see her every day, more like once or twice a month, and when i do, i either don't have my camera or she's too far away for me to chase down. today luck was on my side, and for the first time in probably 2 years of sightings, i introduced myself to francesca. she was very sweet and gracious enough to let me snap her picture. in fact, she said sure, and in seconds had thrown down her bags (she normally carries like 10), and struck a pose:

Sonia Rykiel’s exhibition at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris will be open Wednesday through April 19, 2009 celebrating her 40 years in fashion featuring some 200 outfits. “The exhibit is organized by theme and not chronologically because many of Rykiel’s leitmotifs — lace, stripes, rhinestones, black, etc. — have remained constant throughout her career, said Saillard. Visitors enter the show via a black rotunda where Rykiel’s recorded voice reads some of her pronouncements on style. From there, display cases are dedicated to knitwear, printed dresses, velour jogging suits, marabou coats and slouchy pantsuits — all Rykiel signatures. Each window juxtaposes a piece from early in her career with a more recent one elaborating on the same theme. The second half of the exhibit upstairs includes several windows devoted to large-scale pictures of Rykiel-wearing models by photographer Dominique Issermann.”

today, this drizzly san francisco day, i went to the de young museum in golden gate park with mom to view the yves saint laurent show. it was remarkable! there were clothes from all decades, my favorite being the 60s, all colors and fabrics. the last fashion retrospective i went to was vivienne westwood's, also there at the de young. being able to see art evolve is incredible, its history really, you can see what politics/religon/movements were going on when the piece was conceived blah blah blah.... ysl's collection included a few of his sketches, with swatches. there were outfits i recognized, little celebrities in their own right, with names included on the placard below of who ordered it. one of my favorites was a fitted velvet tuxedo with a frilly blouse, which was ordered by francoise hardy. the lighting was awesome, a cool blue fluorescent glow throughout. no cameras allowed inside the ysl part, so i'm including pictures of a book i bought at the museum store...

i've kept this photo in a folder with other images i've found on the internet, to look back on for inspiration and what not. the funny thing is that i stumbled apon it while looking for a fuller brush, from the fuller brush company. they are hands down the best hair brushes. or were rather, i dont know how they hold up in todays market. but i remember the fuller brush man coming to our door ever so often when i was little, in his pullover sweater and briefcase...
anyway back to the photo, i dont know if this was an old fuller brush advertisement but i love the dress, the jungle-like setting, the saturated colors, and the fact shes sitting next to the 'wishing palm'...

i know its only thursday, but i cant WAIT for the weekend. its been an anxiety-riddled week, month for that matter, so my mom and i are going to take in the yves saint laurent show at the de young! i'm so excited, i'll definitely dress up for the occasion, my sketchbook at the ready...hopefully they allow photography (no flash obviously), if not maybe i can sneak a shot or two with my phone...

Last night as I watched the results of the presidential election, tears streamed down my face as I stood in aww holding our 1 year old daughter. It's a new day. So many thoughts ran through my mind. So many newscasts and coverage of the election kept saying its not about race and kept discussing how he won. For me its simple, he represents us. America and all its diversity. As a daughter of an immigrant mother and my father's mother, my grandmother, who was in America and went back to China because their was nothing to offer her only to come back. And her mother (my great-grandmother) who came to America and was held in internment camps at Angel Island just for the color of her skin. This truly means a lot to me and that my daughter will grow up knowing she can do anything she wants.

Now this is not to say I don't also back the issues Obama says he addressed such as healthcare and more importantly, to me, education and childcare. Man, I can go on and on. Yesterday was truly the most important day of my life right next to the birth of my child. I can honestly say I am proud to be American and feel a sense of pride I have never felt before.

AND her apartment is amazing! it made me want to swipe all my doors with bright red paint, and coat my floors with colorful print rugs. and get down with some kitch...

autumn has taken hold, which means chilly overcast mornings, complete with fog horns. this morning i layered upon layers. leggings, tank, dress, cardigan, long sweater over that, knitted scarf. i love cold weather! which is funny, because the dress i chose is a cobalt party dress i made for my birthday back in july. it serves as a perfect jumper. its design came from one i saw on none other than kate moss. i think its a mcQueen....

it really is time to start considering the holidays. there is a recession after all, and i'm thinking for christmas i may just make my gifts. i also may just make gifts for other people to give as well. lately i've been crocheting up a storm, and have had requests for some necklaces. time to update my etsy store...

the crystals are vintage chandelier pieces, which i crocheted gold colored wire around and attached to silk thread. i am thinking i will speckle a few of these vintage star rhinestones along the top of each...a delicate double-wrap silk chain with silver beads woven inthe feathers were an experiment, and i'm liking how they hang with the chandelier crystals, though a friend suggested i try making a necklace of just feathers...

megan always has something interesting on. she is a graphic designer, with an eye for all things pretty: chocolate bar wrappers, book covers, vintage fabric. we go to to trader joe's and analyze their packaging design. when it comes to clothes, she mixes colors, textures, and patterns that i would have never thought of. and shes ballsy. today she wore an H&M skirt and based the rest of the outfit on its color pallette. i love the long skirt with boots look, which can be frumpy if not done right, but she pulls it off without a hitch. and the best part is she's planning on making pillows out of the skirt once shes tired of wearing it.

road trip in autumn

saturday was spent on a mini road trip to occidental/sebastopol area. the goal was to enjoy the scenery, take some snapshots, and burrow through some amazing vintage clothes. all three were accomplished, with two of the loveliest people i could go with, megan & anna.... there is so much to write about this may end up being a manifesto of sorts. i also wanted to, but couldn't cram all of my photos on here, hence my flickr link...

our first stop was in occidental, about an hour and a half north of san francisco. we took an early lunch at howard's cafe which was charming, the food very tasty. i had fresh fruit with yogurt, granola, and raisins. after, we strolled through the neighborhood, stopping in shops and taking photos. there was a garage sale in a place called the altamont, which took us a while to find (it was an old bar & grill) but was well worth it. anna found a cool vintage levi's shirt for her husband, megan found some carved wooden frames, and i found some snowflake garland for christmas.

one of the shops, renga, had lots of little handmade items, mostly found objects reworked into magnificent new pieces,like these postcards made from old record albums records were reborn as sun flowers and bowls, jewelry was made form old watch chains, buttons and charms. anna tried on this gorgeous rhinestone bracelet, not sure what its former life was...cupcake pin cushionsnormally i'm a jewelry girl, but my favorite were these birdhouses...

we hopped in the car and drove through green fields and forests dotted with red foliage until we arrived at aubergine vintage emporium & cafe in sebasopol. this vintage clothing mecca was not only ginormous, it also had a bar/cafe area complete with stage and coin-operated pony. any game plan (xmas gifts?) i had was thrown to the wind, scouring rack upon rack for things i could justify buying. we all seemed interested in dresses, and must have tried on 10 a piece. i left with one dress (pat one the back Me, for showing a little self control), a blouse, a shirt for paul, and a bob dylan album.

the dressing rooms were amazing: wild rod iron and dyed lace sculpture with a skylight right above

megan modeling a gunne sax dress; debating purchases megan is wild about this dress. i think the tag is pretty neat too.hundreds of vintage purses; a rainbow of belts; anna finding bobthe mens section was a fifth of the womens ;)

the store has been around since the 90s (eek!) i remember going there in the 7th grade, still trapped in the catholic school uniform regime, and feeling like i had been living under a rock. i immediately loved it. since then, its become a reliable source when i need something fun (i also rely on the site for haircut inspiration). they are so reliable, in fact, that an outfit can be made in a few minutes (online anway). this is what i came up with in 15 minutes.

dolce vita adriana dress $198. boat necks are really appealing lately, they are feminine and classy, and i love the colors. i dont know why the model is making an angelina jolie face.

halloween is nearing! though the stores have had their decorations up since september, i wanted to post something about them. so this morning i passed a few of my favorites on polk st., camera at the ready...

swallowtail has some of the most amazing art and furniture pieces, all a bit quirky to say the least. i'm not sure if their current display is honoring the season but needless to say its pretty cool: a bone chandelier complete with a spinal column chain, and one of their taxidermies of a mongoose fighting a cobra....the window display at molte cose & bella cose is always beautiful... kiss met is full of hand-made goodies, like jewelry, decorations, cards, knick knacks, and these little guys...

i think everyone is familiar with bob geldof, of the boomtown rats and live aid fame. lately though his daughters, peaches (peaches honeyblossom michelle charlotte angel vanessa geldof) and pixie (little pixie geldof) in particular, have taken over the british tabs. i love british style (british vogue is so much more colorful and edgy); i think these 2 with their babydoll dresses and costume jewelry + tattoos and controversy sum it up for me...

this weekend i spent in alameda with the family. saturday morning my mom and i went garage sailing (one of our favorite sports). we're always on the hunt for vintage fabric and knitting needles, and random sewing supplies. we had luck on our side because one of the stops had vintage fabric, which we bought 5 swatches of, and vintage CLOTHES!!! i grabbed a few dresses, a skirt and a blouse...we continued on to the alameda naval air base, where a book sale was being held in one of the old ballrooms.

the base is no longer active, but is a neat/spooky spot to cruise, being that there are so many empty buildings and houses. the book sale was a success as well, i had to stop myself and avert my eyes as i made my way to the check out line...when i got home i ran upstairs with one of the fabric swatches and sketched a simple trapeze dress. the fabric, which is rayon, is the perfect dress fabric: it drapes well and breathes like cotton the trickiest part was the collar and getting it to lay flat, which i sort of did by cutting it in a half-circle shape.finished and debuting on this autumny monday morning...

I found out a couple days ago that Norma Kamali did a collection for Walmart. So I immediately went to see if they have the cacoon sweater (see 2nd picture above) I have been lusting after for years (in a cheaper version of course). They did! ... too bad I have been trying to save and thought about it too long. So when I went to order they were all sold out! They only have white left though. I might get it anyways because prices range for 18 to 6 bucks +97 cents shipping! The collection isn't stellar but the prices on these remastered basics can't be beat.

treasure island music festival

this past sunday i ventured over to treasure island by way of free bus to take in some preferable tunes. it was a lovely day. the obvious view of the bay, plus gorgeous weather (a little breezy later but not bad for san francisco) were added perks. the highlights of my day as follows:

performance by fleet foxes, whom i saw for the first time. and loved.the kills; alison mosshart is a wild animal. they say nothing in between songs just writhe and glare on stage. in amazing leather jackets.jack white. i mean the raconteurs. i took 90 blurry streaky pictures of jack during the set.

there was a heavy presence of authentic 70s duds. the best way i can describe it is if you went back in the future, like marty mcFly and met your parents. you cant talk to them because it would completely change the course of your future, but they have cool clothes. teen love...the uniform for the day: lots of boot & scarf combos this girl hesitantly but patiently let me take her photo. i really liked her dress geez...

gerard the giraffe

in the last few weeks i made my first stuffed animal ever: a ragamuffin giraffe named gerard made from vintage cotton fabric and yarn. my friendis having a baby boy in november, so i wanted to make something in blue, but a little more fun than your average teddy bear. i began by googling giraffe images, and from that formed a rough sketch, then jumped right into haphazardly cutting the fabric. i wanted the outcome to be a little imperfect, which lucky for me his neck naturally turns to the side. this was the most fun i've had working on a project in a while!

giraffes are funny-looking animals, in my opinion, rivaling ostriches ...

i went to see the frida kahlo exhibit at the sf moma and was awestruck. she was obviously talented, but mysterious, beautiful, intelligent, eccentric, articulate, and humble to boot. the exhibit is divided into time slots for visitors, crowd control i guess, and is departing september 28! i highly recommend hustling over to see it. i myself was inspired to go home and sketch, make jewelry, sew... and find frida-esque pieces for wearing. enjoy!

disneyland. i manage to get down there every few years, and this summer i felt the tug of the mouse.
my friend val and myself decided to dress alike for the day. partly so we don't lose each other amongst the summer crowd, but mostly for the silliness. red american apparel skirts, so we looked like minnie, matching mouse ears included.i still get the tingles of excitement as i go through the turnstile entrance. little has changed, although johnny depp has been added to the cast of the pirates ride (teeheehee). but the dry sarcasm of the jungle ride hosts, the hitch hiking ghosts at the end of the haunted mansion, the thrill of space mountain! its all there, thank god. it even smells the same: chlorinated water, cotton candy and sunscreen...
as i get older the design aspects are what i am drawn to rather than over-sized plush toys. especially the old attraction posters hanging int he tunnels on your way to main street from the entrance. val found some online at MouseShoppe for $42. can you imagine how much thought goes into a new ride? not just the ride itself, but the line you stand in to get to it?? all these dioramas, statues, buttons to push. not to mention how immaculate the landscaping is kept, and how there is NO garbage on the ground. the park was open until midnight, which we took full advantage of. i went on pirates twice. its really the perfect mini-vacation...

I might be late on this but Tim Burton is officially gonna do Alice in Wonderland. He's been waiting on funding but has since been backed by Disney. So this is gonna be incredible. So far on IMDB they only have this chick Mia Wasikowska signed on as Alice. Never heard of any of the other movies she's on. Also heard that, no surprise, Johnny Depp is in at and should be playing the Mad Hatter, go figure. They make a great team nonetheless.

Remember this movie. Carol Channing as the white queen gave me the heebie jeebies.

I went to the Marina in San Leandro while trying to kill some time. Found this adorable sandal for just $24. Hopefully they don't hurt like the last 2 sandals I bought. They have some really cute shoes by the way. I saw some really cute pumps an sandals for $24 and $40 too. So I would recommend checking the outlest before you splurge on the expensive, trendy stuff.
